I know that I’m writing this short article in November and I realize that your home swimming pool and swimming pool safety is one of the furthest things from most people’s minds. However, this might be the best time of year for me to talk about this. Right now, I have your undivided attention. I want to bring your attention to a really frightening swimming pool drowning statistic.
Here is what I wanted to tell you… Did you know that most child drownings occur within a short five minutes that the child was last seen by a family member? In fact, nearly 77% occur within the last five minutes that a child is seen alive by a family member. Think about it, that is scary!
A Child’s Life Can End So Quickly
Child drownings happen so fast. The mother or father might have just left the child to make a phone call. Or, answer a knock on the front door. Look at their cell phone. It doesn’t take much!
Drowning is the number 1 reason why children between the ages of 1 and 4 die. In 65% of these cases, it is the child’s own family pool. In another 33% of these drowning cases, it is in a relatives or friends family pool.
So, why do I bring up all this data? Because the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) believes the best way to prevent these type of drownings is for family’s that own a home swimming pool is to provide a safety barrier around these pools… a safe swimming pool fence.
Actually, no one should need the CPSC to tell them that the solution to this problem is to erect a safe pool fence. It is the obvious solution to the problem.
So, why are there still so many child drownings? Probably because so many parents don’t believe this problem will occur to them.
That is why I think this 5-minute statistic is so scary!
