Installing a safety pool fence around your residential swimming pool is so important. I know that homeowners see pool fences around public swimming pools all the time, but having one around your home’s swimming pool is just as important. And, once you have installed your own swimming pool at home, it is just as important to lock your swimming pool fences' gates. ALWAYS… NO EXCEPTIONS!
Many homeowners consider a lock on the gate to a swimming pool to be a nuisance. It might very well be a nuisance, but a locked gate to your swimming pool could very well save lives. Drowning is the number 1 leading cause for unintentional deaths for children ages 1 to 4. The majority of these children drown in swimming pools that don’t have a fence, or the gate is faulty or has no lock.
A Gate That Was Not Locked
Take for example a 3-year-old boy in Arizona that nearly died. The boy lived in an apartment complex. The pool area was fenced and it did have a lock on it. On this particular night, however, the swimming pool fences gates were unlocked. Surprisingly, at about 3 AM, the boy made his way to the swimming pool and fell in. Fortunately, a nearby neighbor heard the pool splash and the little boy yell. The neighbor performed CPR and an ambulance was called. The small boy was saved. The neighbor reported to authorities that the gate is normally locked. This was a small, unfortunate occasion.
I have provided this example for a particular reason. Strange and peculiar things are always happening. It only needs to happen once and a human life can be quickly lost.
Never, never, never leave your pool fence unlocked. Locking the pool fence might be troublesome, but in the end, you will never regret doing it!
